Cowboy Kid
About This Game
Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1992, Cowboy Kid is a Western-themed action-adventure game developed by Pixel and published by Romstar. Originally released in Japan as Western Kids, the game combines gun-slinging action with exploration, simple role-playing elements, and a collection of entertaining mini-games. Its blend of cowboy adventure and town exploration makes it quite different from a straightforward run-and-gun shooter.
The story follows Sam, the son of a sheriff who disappeared while investigating a dangerous outlaw gang known as the Scorpions. After Sam is rescued by a young warrior named Little Chief, the two join forces to bring the criminals to justice. Players can control Sam alone or team up with a friend, who takes the role of Little Chief in two-player mode.
Much of the adventure involves exploring towns, talking to residents, entering buildings, and collecting money from treasure chests and barrels. At the beginning, you'll need to find basic equipment and earn enough gold to purchase useful items. Once Sam becomes sheriff, the game opens up into a series of bounty-hunting missions. Each target presents a new challenge as you travel across the Old West and work your way toward the Scorpions' leader.
Combat involves jumping, shooting, and switching weapons to handle different enemies. You can also collect supplies to restore health or gain temporary advantages. Between missions, special activities such as shooting-gallery challenges add variety, requiring you to hit criminal targets without accidentally shooting innocent bystanders.
Cowboy Kid stands out for combining Western action with light exploration and progression. Its colorful presentation, simultaneous two-player gameplay, and bounty-hunting structure give it lasting appeal for retro fans who enjoy adventures with more to do than simply reach the end of a level.
