Bases Loaded 4
About This Game
Bases Loaded 4 is the final entry in Jaleco’s original Bases Loaded series on the NES, and it feels like a game made for players who wanted a more serious baseball experience without losing the quick pace of an arcade-style sports title. Developed by TOSE and released in North America in 1993, it brings back the full season format after Bases Loaded 3 experimented with a different “perfect game” objective.
The main attraction is the season mode, where you can take a fictional team through a long 130-game regular season before trying to finish the postseason on top. If you just want a quick game, exhibition matches are available as well, including two-player competition and a watch mode. A password system allows you to continue a season later, which is especially useful considering how long a complete season can become.
On the field, Bases Loaded 4 keeps the familiar behind-the-pitcher viewpoint that defines the series. Pitching gives you plenty of control over where the ball is thrown and how fast it travels, while batting depends on reading the pitch and choosing the right area of the strike zone. Base running and defensive plays add another layer of strategy, so simply swinging at everything rarely works.
Visually, the game builds on its predecessors with larger fielders and somewhat more detailed animations. The presentation is still unmistakably an NES baseball game, but there is a satisfying sense of weight to the players and plays.
There are no official MLB teams or players, but that is hardly the point. Bases Loaded 4 is about learning its mechanics, managing a team over a long season, and enjoying the tension of a close baseball game.
