About This Game

Zanac is one of the most impressive early shoot-'em-ups on the NES, especially considering that the console version arrived in North America in 1987. Developed by Compile and published by FCI, the game puts you behind the controls of the AFX-6502 Zanac, a spacecraft sent to stop a powerful artificial intelligence known simply as the System. The goal is straightforward: survive twelve increasingly dangerous areas and destroy the System's defenses.

What makes Zanac special is how fast everything moves. Enemy ships can appear from almost anywhere, while bullets, turrets, missiles, and larger enemy craft can quickly fill the screen. Rather than relying on a single weapon, the Zanac fighter can collect eight different special weapons. Some provide wider attacks, others fire in different directions, and some offer defensive abilities. Collecting the same numbered power-up repeatedly can also strengthen the weapon you're currently using.

The game's most interesting feature is its Automatic Level of Difficulty Control (ALC). Zanac actually pays attention to how you play. Aggressive shooting, collecting power-ups, and certain successful actions can make the enemy response more intense, while other actions can reduce the pressure. This means the game doesn't always feel exactly the same from one attempt to another.

The result is a shooter that feels remarkably lively for an early NES title. It's fast, challenging, and packed with enemies, but the excellent weapon system gives you plenty of ways to survive. Zanac is a must-play for fans of classic vertical shooters and an early showcase of Compile's talent for the genre.
