King's Quest V
About This Game
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! brings Sierra's beloved fantasy adventure series to the Nintendo Entertainment System in a version published by Konami in 1992. Originally created by Sierra On-Line, the game was adapted for the NES by Novotrade International, transforming a classic computer adventure into a controller-based quest filled with exploration, puzzles, and memorable characters.
The story follows King Graham of Daventry after a mysterious magical wind causes his castle and family to vanish. With his kingdom in danger, Graham must travel across unfamiliar lands to discover what happened and rescue his loved ones. His journey leads through snowy mountains, enchanted forests, scorching deserts, and dangerous coastlines, where unexpected encounters can provide valuable clues or create new problems.
Unlike traditional action platformers, King's Quest V focuses on exploration and problem-solving. Players guide Graham through each environment, speak with characters, examine objects, and collect items that may be needed later. Using the right object in the right situation is essential to overcoming obstacles and progressing through the story. The game also includes dangerous encounters with creatures and villains, so careful decisions are important throughout the adventure.
The NES adaptation uses an icon-based interface designed around the console's limited controls. Players select actions and interact with the environment using the controller rather than a computer mouse. Although the graphics and some sections differ from the original computer release, the port preserves the central adventure, its fantasy atmosphere, and many of its puzzles.
With its story-driven gameplay, varied environments, and emphasis on observation and logical thinking, King's Quest V offers a different experience from most NES titles. It is an interesting choice for players who enjoy classic fantasy adventures and want to explore one of Sierra's best-known game series on a home console.
