The Battle of Olympus
About This Game
Released on the NES in 1988 in Japan and later in North America and Europe, The Battle of Olympus is a memorable action-adventure built around Greek mythology. You play as Orpheus, a young hero whose beloved Helene has been taken by Hades. To bring her back, Orpheus must travel across ancient Greece, meet the gods, collect powerful items, and eventually enter the underworld.
The game has a structure that will feel familiar to fans of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Most areas are presented as side-scrolling sections where Orpheus explores villages, forests, caves, and dangerous territories while fighting monsters. There is also a larger map connecting different regions of Greece, making exploration an important part of the adventure.
Progression is based heavily on finding new equipment and gaining the favor of the gods. Zeus, Athena, Hephaestus, and other figures from Greek mythology provide important weapons, shields, and special abilities that allow Orpheus to reach previously inaccessible areas. The game also features enemies such as Cyclopes, Minotaurs, Centaurs, and Hydra, giving the adventure a strong mythological identity.
One of the best things about The Battle of Olympus is that it does not simply send you from one stage to another. You often need to talk with characters, remember clues, search for hidden paths, and figure out where to go next. Three Fragments of Love must also be collected before Orpheus can reach Tartarus and confront Hades.
With its atmospheric Greek setting, challenging combat, interconnected world, and unusual story, The Battle of Olympus has developed a well-deserved cult following among NES fans. It is a great choice for players who enjoy exploration as much as action.
