Spy vs. Spy
About This Game
Spy vs. Spy is a classic action-puzzle game based on the popular comic strip from MAD magazine. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version was released in North America in 1988, with Kemco handling its development and publication. Featuring two rival spies, clever traps, and plenty of cartoon-style mischief, the game offers a different kind of challenge from traditional 8-bit platformers.
Choose between the black spy and the white spy as you explore a large embassy filled with rooms, hidden objects, and dangerous surprises. Your main objective is to locate four essential items: money, a passport, secret plans, and the key to the airport exit. Search desks, cabinets, and other pieces of furniture to uncover the objects you need, then place them in your briefcase and escape before your opponent does.
However, finding the items is only half the battle. Your rival is searching the same building and can set traps inside furniture, behind doors, and in other locations. A seemingly harmless room may contain an explosive surprise, so pay attention to your surroundings and use available tools to disarm dangerous traps. You can also place traps of your own to slow down the opposing spy and gain an advantage.
When the two spies meet, direct combat can break out, adding another layer of competition to the search. The NES version supports both single-player and two-player modes, making it particularly entertaining when competing against a friend. Split-screen gameplay keeps both spies in view, allowing players to plan their movements while trying to outsmart one another.
With its unusual blend of exploration, strategy, combat, and slapstick humor, Spy vs. Spy remains a memorable entry in the NES library. Every room presents a potential opportunity or danger, and success depends on quick decisions as much as careful planning. If you enjoy classic puzzle-action games, retro multiplayer challenges, and competitive games built around tricking your opponent, Spy vs. Spy delivers a distinctive espionage adventure.
