Elevator Action
About This Game
Elevator Action is a classic arcade-style action game that turns an ordinary office building into a maze of elevators, secret documents, and armed enemies. Originally created by Taito and released in arcades in 1983, the game later arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in August 1987. Its simple premise and unusual vertical level design helped it stand apart from the many side-scrolling action games of the era.
You play as Agent 17, a secret agent commonly known as Otto, who must infiltrate a heavily guarded building and steal classified documents. The mission begins near the top of the structure, and your objective is to work your way down through multiple floors before escaping through the garage. Red doors mark rooms containing the valuable files, so reaching the exit is not enough: you must search the building and collect every required document along the way.
Elevators are the heart of the gameplay. You can ride them between floors, use escalators to move through the building, and sometimes turn the elevators themselves into weapons by trapping enemy agents beneath them. Guards appear from doorways and fire at you, forcing you to react quickly. Otto can shoot his pistol, crouch to avoid incoming bullets, or use a close-range kick when enemies get too near. Shooting ceiling lights can also create darkness, changing the conditions of a firefight.
Speed is important because each mission has a time limit. Exploring every floor while avoiding enemy fire requires planning, and getting trapped between elevators or surrounded by guards can end a run quickly. The NES version also supports two-player alternating play, allowing friends to take turns tackling the same spy mission.
With its recognizable 8-bit graphics, tense encounters, and clever use of elevators as both transportation and weapons, Elevator Action remains a distinctive example of early stealth-inspired arcade action.
