Metal Fighter
About This Game
Metal Fighter is a science-fiction side-scrolling shooter developed by Joy Van and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. Published in North America by Color Dreams, this lesser-known NES game takes players to planet H17, a world overrun by hostile aliens and grotesque biomechanical creatures. You control MCS-920, a powerful robotic warrior returning from centuries of intergalactic missions to discover that the planet has fallen into enemy hands.
Your mission is to fight through the alien-infested landscape, destroy enemy forces, and defeat the powerful alien tyrants controlling each area. The adventure moves horizontally across a variety of environments, including barren wastelands, colorful underwater-like landscapes, abandoned cities, and frozen regions. Each stage introduces new enemies and hazards, culminating in a challenging boss battle that tests your weapons and reflexes.
Combat revolves around firing plasma projectiles at approaching enemies. You can charge your shots to unleash more powerful attacks, while defeated foes sometimes leave behind useful power-ups. These upgrades can increase your movement speed, improve your weapons, and unlock additional firing patterns. One particularly important upgrade grants the ability to fly, changing how you navigate the levels and avoid incoming attacks.
Collecting a weapon upgrade is not always straightforward. Certain power-ups trigger a special challenge in which you must defeat a robotic clone of MCS-920 before claiming the new ability. These encounters add an extra layer of difficulty and make choosing when to pursue upgrades an important part of the game.
With its unusual robotic hero, colorful alien worlds, upgrade system, and demanding boss fights, Metal Fighter offers a distinctive experience for fans of obscure NES releases. Players who enjoy classic science-fiction shooters and challenging 8-bit action games may find this hidden gem worth exploring.
