About This Game

Game Overview
Duck Hunt came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of the pack-in titles that showed off the NES Zapper light gun, a peripheral that felt like a step into the future for home consoles at the time. The game had a simple premise, but it was one of those experiences that really made you feel like you were interacting with the screen in a new way.

You control a reticle on the screen by pointing the Zapper directly at your television. Your goal is to shoot ducks as they fly up from the tall grass, before they can escape off the top of the screen. You get three shots per duck, and if you miss too many, the round ends. The ducks start off flying slowly and predictably, but as you progress, their patterns become faster and more erratic, sometimes splitting apart or changing direction suddenly. Missing a shot often prompts the game's hunting dog to pop up and laugh at you, which is equal parts charming and frustrating. It's a game of quick reflexes and calm aim, and it feels surprisingly physical, leaning forward on the carpet to get a better shot.
