The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt
About This Game
The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt puts Pugsley Addams in the middle of a strange and slightly creepy adventure through the Addams family mansion. Released for the NES in 1993, the game was developed by Enigma Variations and published by Ocean. It is based on the animated Addams Family series and follows Pugsley as he searches for his missing family members.
The adventure begins when Pugsley takes on a scavenger hunt challenge from Wednesday. His objective is to explore the mansion and its surrounding areas, find unusual items, and eventually rescue members of the family. The mansion is not laid out like a traditional linear platform game. Different doors lead to different areas, allowing players to decide which part of the adventure they want to tackle first.
Gameplay is built around classic side-scrolling platforming. Pugsley spends most of his time jumping across platforms, avoiding bizarre enemies, navigating hazards, and searching for hidden routes. The strange creatures and environments fit the Addams Family theme nicely, while helpful messages from Thing occasionally point players in the right direction.
The NES version is somewhat different from the larger 16-bit releases. Its stages are shorter, some areas were removed or reduced, and it does not include the same weapons found in the SNES version. It also has no regular in-game music, making the experience noticeably quieter than many other NES platformers. On the positive side, passwords can be obtained while playing, making it easier to continue the adventure later.
Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt is not the biggest or most polished platformer on the NES, but its unusual setting, recognizable characters, non-linear exploration, and quirky enemies give it plenty of personality. For fans of The Addams Family and late-era NES games, it is an interesting title worth revisiting.
