About This Game

Nobunaga's Ambition is a historical strategy game developed and published by Koei for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Released in North America in 1989, this classic strategy title takes players back to Japan's turbulent Sengoku period, when rival feudal lords fought for control of the country. Inspired by real historical figures and events, the game challenges you to build a powerful domain and unite Japan under your rule.

Players assume the role of a daimyo, a powerful regional lord, with the ultimate goal of conquering rival territories and becoming the dominant ruler of Japan. You can choose to lead the famous Oda Nobunaga or select another historical warlord, each with different abilities and starting conditions. Two scenarios are available: one covering 17 provinces in central Japan and a larger challenge involving all 50 provinces.

Victory requires more than military strength. You must manage rice supplies, collect taxes, develop farmland, expand towns, recruit soldiers, and train your army. Diplomacy also plays an important role, allowing you to negotiate alliances and temporary peace agreements with neighboring lords. Careful resource management is essential because excessive taxation can reduce loyalty, while natural disasters, disease, and rebellions can weaken your domain.

When diplomacy fails, turn-based battles determine the fate of your territories. Position your troops strategically, move units across the battlefield, and use infantry, cavalry, and riflemen to gain an advantage over enemy forces. Every decision can influence your kingdom's future, making patience and long-term planning just as important as military conquest.

With its detailed historical setting, strategic depth, and blend of economics, diplomacy, and warfare, Nobunaga's Ambition offers a different experience from typical action games of the NES era. Whether you prefer expanding peacefully or defeating rival warlords in battle, this classic Koei strategy game lets you shape the course of Japanese history one turn at a time.
