Godzilla: Monster of Monsters
About This Game
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters is an action game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in October 1989. Developed by Compile and published by Toho, the game brings the legendary King of the Monsters into a science-fiction adventure across the solar system. When aliens from Planet X launch an invasion using an army of giant monsters, Godzilla teams up with the giant moth Mothra to defend Earth and defeat the extraterrestrial threat.
The adventure spans eight battle stages, beginning on Earth and continuing across planets including Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, and Neptune before reaching Planet X. Each world is represented by a map made up of hexagonal spaces. Players choose where to move Godzilla or Mothra, with each space leading to an action stage filled with enemy forces, dangerous terrain, and environmental hazards. Reaching the enemy headquarters is the key to advancing through each world.
The game features two playable monsters with very different abilities. Godzilla is a powerful ground fighter who can punch, kick, swing his tail, and unleash his signature atomic breath. Mothra is faster and can fly over many obstacles, using energy beams and poisonous powder to attack enemies. Choosing the right monster for a particular stage is essential to surviving the increasingly difficult challenges.
Along the way, players face familiar creatures from the Godzilla universe, including Hedorah, Gigan, Mechagodzilla, and the mighty King Ghidorah. When an enemy monster blocks the route, gameplay switches to a one-on-one battle where timing, positioning, and well-chosen attacks determine the winner. Both heroes can grow stronger by gaining levels, improving their endurance and attack power as the invasion progresses.
With its combination of map-based strategy, side-scrolling action, and giant-monster battles, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters offers a distinctive retro adventure. Its colorful environments and iconic kaiju roster make it an appealing choice for fans of classic Godzilla games and challenging NES action titles.
