Bases Loaded II: Second Season
Bases Loaded II: Second Season takes the foundation of the original Bases Loaded and adds a much stronger management element to the NES baseball formula. Developed by TOSE and published by Jaleco, the game was released in Japan in 1988 and reached North America in 1990. It puts you in charge of one of twelve fictional professional teams and lets you compete in either individual games or a long pennant race.
The pennant race is where the game really starts to show its depth. Your team plays through a 130-game season, and winning at least 75 games earns a place in the World Series. With such a long schedule, choosing the right players and managing your lineup becomes almost as important as what happens on the field. You can change the batting order and decide which players are best suited for a particular situation.
One of the game's most unusual features is its player performance system. Each player has changing physical, sensitivity, and intellectual ratings that represent daily form, creating streaks and slumps that can affect performance. A player who has been struggling for several games may not be the best choice for an important situation, while someone in good form can become a valuable part of your lineup.
On the field, Bases Loaded II improves the series with diving stops, leaping catches, stolen bases, pickoffs, and fully simulated pitching, batting, fielding, and base-running. The camera also changes during defensive play, giving the game a more dynamic feel than its predecessor.
Bases Loaded II: Second Season is a good example of an NES sports game trying to go beyond quick arcade matches. Its long season, player management, changing form, and strategic decisions make it particularly appealing to baseball fans who enjoy the managerial side as much as the action itself.
