G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero
About This Game
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is an action-packed run-and-gun game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in January 1991. Developed by KID and published by Taxan, the game brings the popular G.I. Joe action figure franchise to an 8-bit military adventure. Players lead an elite team of soldiers on a dangerous worldwide mission to stop Cobra, the ruthless organization determined to dominate the world.
The adventure spans six major missions, taking players through locations such as the Amazon jungle, Antarctica, the New York City sewers, the Black Hills, and the Sahara Desert before the final assault on Cobra Headquarters. Each mission combines fast-paced combat, platforming, and strategic objectives that require more than simply shooting every enemy in sight.
One of the game's standout features is its selectable team system. Players choose three operatives from five available characters: Duke, Snake Eyes, Rock 'n Roll, Blizzard, and Captain Grid-Iron. Each soldier has different strengths, including weapon power, stamina, agility, and jumping ability. Switching characters during a mission lets players adapt to changing situations and make better use of each fighter's abilities. General Hawk also joins the playable roster for the final stage.
Missions are divided into distinct sections. Players first fight through enemy territory, then explore a maze-like Cobra base to plant explosives at designated locations before escaping and confronting a powerful boss. Along the way, weapon upgrades, ammunition, and health items help strengthen the team. Certain stages also feature vehicles such as the Buzz Boar, Pogo, and Battle Copter, adding variety to the action.
With colorful graphics, recognizable characters, varied environments, and challenging boss battles, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero delivers an engaging military action experience. It remains a memorable NES title for fans of classic run-and-gun games and the original G.I. Joe universe.
