About This Game

Dance Aerobics is a unique fitness game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that turns your living room into a virtual workout studio. Released in North America in 1989 and originally known in Japan as Family Trainer 3: Aerobics Studio, the game was developed by Human Entertainment and published by Nintendo. Unlike most NES games, it requires the Power Pad floor mat accessory, making physical movement the main part of the experience.

The main mode challenges you to follow an on-screen aerobics instructor by stepping on the correct spaces of the Power Pad in time with the music. Early routines are fairly simple, giving you a chance to learn the movements, but later classes introduce longer sequences and less time to practice. Every missed step counts against your performance, so keeping up with the instructor becomes increasingly demanding. Successfully completing classes lets you progress through the workout program, with pass stamps available to help you resume at later stages.

Dance Aerobics also includes Pad Antics, a collection of three smaller activities. Tune Up lets you create melodies by stepping on musical notes, while Mat Melodies tests your memory by asking you to repeat sequences of notes. Ditto is a Twister-style challenge in which you must place your hands and feet on the positions shown on screen. For a less demanding session, Aerobic Studios offers preset workouts of different lengths, letting you practice without the usual class progression.

With its unusual controller, music-based challenges, and emphasis on coordination, Dance Aerobics stands apart from traditional platformers and action games. It offers a fascinating look at Nintendo's early experiments with motion-based gaming and home fitness.
