About This Game

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, Captain Skyhawk is a fast-paced shooter developed by Rare and published in North America by Milton Bradley. Rather than following the usual side-scrolling format, the game uses an isometric viewpoint that creates the illusion of flying through a three-dimensional world. Mountains, enemy installations, and open landscapes give each mission a distinctive sense of depth for an NES game.

The story begins with an alien invasion. Enemy forces have established bases around the world, draining Earth's energy to power a massive space station capable of destroying the planet. As Captain Skyhawk, you pilot the experimental F-14VTS fighter jet and take on a series of dangerous missions to stop the invasion before it is too late.

The game features nine missions with several different objectives. You will attack alien bases, engage enemy fighters in aerial combat, deliver supplies to scientists, and rescue important personnel. These changes in objectives keep the action from feeling like a simple exercise in shooting everything on screen. Flying safely through the terrain is just as important as hitting your targets, especially when enemy aircraft are on your tail.

Weapons and upgrades add another layer of strategy. Your cannon provides unlimited ammunition, while missiles and bombs offer more powerful attacks but must be managed carefully. Between missions, you can dock with a space station to purchase additional equipment using credits earned in combat. Successfully docking requires precise positioning and timing, making even this short break a challenge of its own.

With its unusual perspective, varied mission objectives, and memorable soundtrack by David Wise, Captain Skyhawk remains a distinctive entry in the NES shooter library. It is a rewarding choice for players who enjoy classic arcade action mixed with a little tactical thinking.
