Bomberman II
About This Game
Bomberman II is a classic NES maze game that takes the basic bomb-laying formula of the original Bomberman and gives it a more focused single-player adventure. Developed and published by Hudson Soft, it was released in Japan and Europe in 1991 before reaching North America in 1993. European players knew the game as Dynablaster, but underneath the different name was the same explosive Bomberman experience.
The story begins with Bomberman being framed for a bank robbery by Black Bomberman. Imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, he has to fight his way through a series of prison areas to escape and clear his name. Each room is packed with breakable blocks, enemies, hidden items, and a carefully placed exit.
The familiar Bomberman strategy is still the heart of the game. Bombs can destroy blocks and enemies, but their explosions can hurt Bomberman too, so careless placement is often just as dangerous as the enemies themselves. Destroying certain blocks reveals power-ups that can increase bomb capacity or explosion range, making Bomberman considerably stronger as the adventure progresses.
Bomberman II also includes competitive multiplayer. Two players can battle against each other in Versus Mode, while Battle Mode supports up to three players when using an NES Four Score. These matches turn the game's simple maze design into a tense contest where trapping an opponent with a well-placed bomb can be incredibly satisfying.
A password system is another useful addition. Passwords keep track of the player's current area, number of bombs, and explosion strength, allowing progress to be continued later without starting from the beginning.
With its combination of maze-solving, resource management, quick reactions, and multiplayer battles, Bomberman II remains one of the more enjoyable early NES entries in the series. It is simple to understand, but mastering bomb placement and learning how to control the limited space takes practice.
