Heavy Shreddin'
About This Game
Heavy Shreddin' is a snowboarding game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in June 1990. Developed by Imagineering and published by Parker Brothers in North America, it brings the excitement of downhill snowboarding to an 8-bit console. The European release appeared under the title Snowboard Challenge. Instead of racing against other competitors, players must master a series of increasingly difficult mountain courses, avoid dangerous obstacles, and perform tricks to earn points.
The game features three mountains: Poseur Peak, Scary Summit, and Mount Mortified. Each mountain offers different runs and three difficulty levels, allowing players to progress from novice trails to demanding expert challenges. Across five event types and 18 levels, the courses test speed, precision, timing, and the ability to react quickly to changing terrain.
Each event introduces a different challenge. Downhill runs focus on reaching the finish before time expires, while slalom courses require players to weave between gates without missing them. Half-pipe events reward aerial tricks, and mogul sections challenge players to jump over bumps of varying sizes. The Backwoods stages combine speed, stunts, and obstacle avoidance, putting all the player's snowboarding skills to the test.
Tricks are an important part of the experience. Players can perform moves such as toe grabs, hand-plants, mid-air 360-degree spins, and mule-kicks by combining jumps with directional controls. Successful stunts can earn points, but poorly timed moves may cause a crash and cost a life. Players begin with four lives, so learning each course is essential to reaching the end.
The angled scrolling perspective gives players a view of the snowboarder moving down the mountain, with trees, rocks, gaps, and other hazards scattered along the route. Completing every event earns the coveted World Cup trophy.
With its varied challenges, stunt-based scoring, and demanding mountain trails, Heavy Shreddin' offers a distinctive winter-sports experience for fans of classic NES games.
