Donkey Kong 3
About This Game
Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in June 1986, Donkey Kong 3 is an arcade-style action shooter developed and published by Nintendo. Originally introduced in arcades in 1983, the game takes a very different approach from the earlier Donkey Kong titles. Instead of controlling Mario through platforming challenges, players step into the shoes of Stanley, a greenhouse caretaker who must protect his plants from Donkey Kong and waves of invading insects.
The action takes place across a series of greenhouse screens where Donkey Kong hangs from vines above Stanley. Armed with a can of bug spray, Stanley must spray the giant ape to push him upward toward the top of the screen. If Donkey Kong reaches the bottom of the vines, Stanley's plants are in danger. At the same time, swarms of bees, beetles, and other insects fly around the greenhouse, attempting to steal vegetables or attack Stanley. Players must manage both threats while avoiding enemy contact.
Timing and positioning are essential to surviving each round. Stanley can climb ladders to reach different heights, giving him better angles for spraying Donkey Kong and dealing with incoming insects. Certain power-ups temporarily strengthen his spray, allowing him to drive the ape upward more quickly. Players must also keep an eye on the plants below, since losing them makes the challenge increasingly difficult.
The NES version retains the fast-paced gameplay of the original arcade release, with a second game mode and a turn-taking two-player option. Its simple controls make it easy to understand, but the growing number of enemies and increasingly hectic action demand quick reactions and constant awareness.
Although Donkey Kong 3 abandons the platforming formula that made the series famous, its unusual greenhouse setting and spray-based combat give it a distinctive identity. It remains an interesting piece of Nintendo history and a fun choice for players who enjoy classic arcade shooters.
