About This Game

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in February 1990, Destination Earthstar is a science-fiction shooter developed by Imagineering and published by Acclaim. The game follows a daring space pilot on a mission to find Earth, the ancestral home of humanity. Two centuries earlier, an alien race known as the Kojans had captured Earth's inhabitants and forced them into slavery. Now, their descendants are searching the galaxy for their lost homeland, but hostile forces stand between them and their destination.

The adventure takes players through eight star systems, each filled with enemy fighters, dangerous encounters, and an enemy base that must eventually be destroyed. Gameplay is divided into two distinct styles. During the first phase, players control their spacecraft from a first-person cockpit perspective, navigating a star map, tracking hostile ships, and managing altitude, speed, energy, and weapons. Radar helps locate enemies, while careful resource management is essential for surviving longer engagements.

The ship begins with a Ruby Laser and Neutron Torpedoes. The laser provides rapid fire but can overheat, forcing players to pause before using it again. Torpedoes deliver greater damage but are limited in supply. Additional weapons, including the Argon Blaster and Heat Seeker, can be discovered during the journey. Landing on certain planets allows players to replenish energy and ammunition before continuing their mission.

Once all hostile fighters in a system have been eliminated, the game shifts into a side-scrolling shooter as the player attacks the enemy base. These sequences introduce tighter passages, incoming fire, and enemies approaching from different directions. Players must destroy the base's defenses and defeat its leader before advancing to the next system.

With its unusual combination of cockpit-based space simulation and traditional scrolling action, Destination Earthstar offers a distinctive experience for fans of classic NES science-fiction games.
