Crisis Force
About This Game
Released in Japan in 1991, Crisis Force is a vertically scrolling shooter developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Famicom. Set in the futuristic year 199X, the game begins as a mysterious army of robots launches an attack on Tokyo. With the city under threat, two young pilots take to the skies in powerful fighter craft to stop the invasion and uncover the danger behind it.
The adventure spans seven stages filled with enemy formations, incoming projectiles, and enormous mechanical bosses. You guide your ship upward through detailed environments, weaving between attacks while firing at anything standing in your way. The action can become intense quickly, so positioning and choosing the right weapon are just as important as keeping the fire button pressed.
Crisis Force's standout feature is its transforming spacecraft. You can switch between three different configurations, each designed for a different style of attack. One focuses its fire forward, another covers the sides, and a third attacks enemies approaching from behind. Changing forms at the right moment helps you handle different enemy patterns and gives the combat more variety than a typical scrolling shooter.
Collecting power-ups strengthens your weapons, while special items allow your ship to transform into a much larger and more destructive craft for a limited time. These temporary transformations are especially useful during difficult sections and boss fights. The game also supports two-player cooperative play, letting two pilots fight the robotic invasion together.
Crisis Force is particularly impressive for its detailed backgrounds, layered scrolling effects, large bosses, and smooth action. Konami pushed the Famicom hardware hard to create a shooter that feels visually ambitious for an 8-bit console. Because it remained a Japan-only release, it became a lesser-known title outside its home market, but it remains an exciting discovery for fans of classic shoot-'em-up games.
