About This Game

Over Horizon is a science-fiction shoot-'em-up developed by Pixel and Hot-B and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in Japan in 1991. Later published in Europe by Takara, this impressive space shooter stands out for its colorful graphics, inventive level design, and unusual weapon customization system. Although it never received an official North American NES release, it has become a memorable discovery for fans of classic 8-bit shooters.

Players pilot a powerful starfighter named Michael on a mission to stop the Gamma organization from conquering the Alpharos star system. Gamma plans to use a dangerous alien creature called Kassandra as a weapon, and your task is to fight through waves of enemy spacecraft, mechanical defenses, and bizarre extraterrestrial life forms before confronting the threat behind the invasion.

The adventure spans six stages, each featuring distinctive environments, dangerous obstacles, and challenging bosses. Unlike shooters that only allow forward attacks, Over Horizon lets you fire both forward and backward, giving you more flexibility when enemies approach from unexpected directions. Defeated opponents may also leave behind power-ups that improve your weapons or provide additional support units known as options.

One of the game's most interesting features is its Edit Mode. Before launching into battle, you can customize your weapons and adjust the positioning of your support units. By assigning points to different weapon characteristics, you can create variations that suit your preferred playstyle. Your options can also be positioned for offensive or defensive purposes, adding a welcome layer of strategy to the action.

With its atmospheric soundtrack, vibrant visuals, creative stage hazards, and flexible combat system, Over Horizon offers a distinctive alternative to familiar shooters such as Gradius and R-Type. Its combination of accessible controls and meaningful customization makes every run an opportunity to experiment and improve.

Take control of Michael's starfighter, customize your arsenal, and defend the Alpharos star system in this underrated classic NES space shooter.
