Deja Vu
About This Game
Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1990, Déjà Vu: A Nightmare Comes True!! is a detective adventure originally created by ICOM Simulations. The NES version was adapted by Kemco from the original computer game, first released in 1985. Set in 1940s Chicago, it draws inspiration from classic film noir and hard-boiled detective stories, placing players in a mystery filled with suspicious characters, dangerous situations, and clues waiting to be uncovered.
The story begins when private detective Ace Harding wakes up in a restroom at a seedy bar with no memory of how he got there. His situation quickly becomes worse when he discovers a dead body and realizes that a gun with missing bullets is in his possession. With his memory gone and the police likely to suspect him of murder, Ace must piece together the events surrounding the crime, uncover his own identity, and find a way to clear his name before time runs out.
Gameplay revolves around exploring locations, examining objects, collecting clues, and using items to solve puzzles. Players can investigate rooms, search containers, question the evidence around them, and combine objects to discover new possibilities. The interface presents different windows for the character's surroundings, inventory, and actions, giving the game a distinctive point-and-click style adapted for a console controller. Careful observation is essential, as overlooking a small detail can prevent progress or lead Ace into a dangerous situation.
Unlike action-focused NES adventures, Déjà Vu rewards patience and logical thinking rather than quick reflexes. Its grim atmosphere, first-person perspective, and branching investigative challenges make it a memorable example of an early console detective game.
For players who enjoy classic mysteries and noir storytelling, Déjà Vu offers a tense investigation where every clue matters and the truth is never as simple as it first appears.
