About This Game

1943: The Battle of Midway is one of Capcom’s classic vertical shoot-'em-ups, bringing the company’s popular arcade series to the NES in 1988. Set during the Pacific theater of World War II, the game puts you in control of a P-38 Lightning fighter as you battle enemy aircraft and naval forces across the Pacific. The NES version is more than a simple arcade conversion, though—it introduces several changes that give the game a stronger sense of progression.

The objective is straightforward: survive a series of intense missions while destroying enemy fighters, bombers, aircraft carriers, and battleships. The NES release contains 16 stages, mixing aerial battles with sections where you attack large naval targets. Eventually, your journey leads to the Japanese battleship Yamato, providing a fitting finale to the campaign.

One of the biggest differences from the arcade game is the ability to upgrade your aircraft permanently. By collecting and managing upgrade points, you can improve offensive power, defensive strength, maximum fuel, and special weapons. This adds an interesting layer of strategy because deciding where to invest those points can make later stages considerably easier—or leave you struggling if you develop the wrong abilities.

The combat itself remains fast and demanding. Enemy formations appear constantly, projectiles can fill the screen, and large bosses require you to stay mobile while looking for opportunities to attack. Special weapons and emergency maneuvers can help turn a dangerous situation around.

For fans of classic shooters, 1943: The Battle of Midway is an important NES title. It combines arcade-style action with RPG-like upgrades, making this version feel distinct rather than simply being a scaled-down port.
