Sometimes the safest-looking route is not the best route.

The caves themselves are carefully designed puzzles. Some are relatively open and allow players to experiment with digging and movement, while later layouts become much more demanding. Narrow passages, clusters of rocks, groups of diamonds, and strategically placed obstacles can force the player to plan an entire route before making a move.

Time also adds pressure. Players cannot spend forever analyzing the cave because each stage operates under a time limit. This changes the way the game feels compared with a conventional turn-based puzzle. You have to think carefully, but you also need to act. Spending too long deciding what to do can be just as dangerous as making a bad decision.

One of the most satisfying mechanics is the chain reaction caused by falling objects. A single rock can fall onto another rock, potentially causing both to move and opening a new path. These interactions can be used strategically to clear areas, reach diamonds, or create a route toward the exit. However, the same physics can work against the player. A poorly planned move can cause rocks to fall into the wrong position and permanently block an important passage.

Enemies add another layer of danger. Depending on the stage and version, players may encounter creatures that move through the caves and can interfere with Rockford's plans. These enemies are often less important than the environmental hazards, but they make already complicated areas more difficult. The player has to consider both the cave's physics and the movement of hostile creatures.

Boulder Dash is especially interesting because it does not require complicated controls. Movement is simple, and the player does not have an extensive collection of special abilities. Nearly all of the game's depth comes from the interaction between Rockford and the environment. This is a good example of a game where simple controls can support surprisingly sophisticated gameplay.
