Alpha Mission

Alpha Mission is a classic vertical shoot ’em up from SNK that puts you behind the controls of the SYD fighter. Originally released in arcades, the game made its way to the Famicom and NES, bringing its fast-moving space battles to the home console. In the story, the Seven Stars Alliance has destroyed its own worlds and is now searching for a new planet to rebuild on. Unfortunately for Earth, they choose it as their next target.

What makes Alpha Mission more interesting than a straightforward shooter is the way it handles weapons. You are dealing with both airborne enemies and targets on the ground, and they require different attacks. Missiles are useful against ground targets, while your aerial weapons are aimed at enemies flying above you. That means you cannot simply hold down the fire button and expect to survive. You have to pay attention to what is coming from each direction and switch your attacks at the right moment.

Power-ups are another important part of the experience. Collecting them allows the SYD fighter to become stronger and gives you access to more powerful weapons. There is also an energy-based armor system, adding another layer of strategy to a genre that could otherwise be purely reflex-driven. The catch is that getting destroyed can cost you the weapons you have built up, making later sections especially tense.

Alpha Mission is a tough but rewarding NES shooter for players who enjoy old-school arcade action. Its combination of constant movement, weapon management, ground and air targets, and demanding boss battles gives it a distinct personality among early NES shoot ’em ups.
