Yoshi's Cookie

Yoshi's Cookie is a simple-looking puzzle game that becomes surprisingly challenging once the cookies start piling up. Released for the NES in 1992, the game was developed by Tose and published by Nintendo. Unlike Yoshi, which uses falling characters and vertical columns, Yoshi's Cookie gives you a board filled with different kinds of cookies and asks you to line up matching ones.

The rules are easy to understand. The playing field contains six cookie designs, including hearts, flowers, diamonds, circles, checker patterns, and special Yoshi cookies. You move entire rows or columns of cookies rather than individual pieces. Line up a complete row or column of the same type, and those cookies disappear. The challenge comes from planning several moves ahead while new cookies continue entering the board from the top and right sides. If the cookies fill the playing area, the game is over.

There is more strategy here than the cheerful presentation might suggest. A good move can clear several lines and create useful space, while a careless move can leave the board dangerously crowded. Yoshi cookies are particularly important and can be earned by clearing enough regular cookies, making them something worth thinking about rather than simply another tile. The NES version also includes a two-player mode, giving the game some extra replay value beyond its single-player rounds.

What makes Yoshi's Cookie enjoyable today is its straightforward design. There are no complicated controls or lengthy tutorials; you can understand the basic idea within seconds. But reaching the higher rounds requires quick thinking and a good sense of timing. It is a colorful, addictive little puzzle game that fits naturally alongside Nintendo's other classic 8-bit titles.
