About This Game

Al Unser Jr.'s Turbo Racing is a surprisingly detailed racing game for the NES, especially for players who enjoy the idea of managing a car rather than simply driving as fast as possible. Developed and published by Data East, the game arrived in North America in 1990 and is based on the earlier Japanese Famicom title World Grand-Prix: Pole to Finish. The American release added Al Unser Jr. as an in-game coach and gave the game its licensed name.

The main attraction is the World Grand Prix season, where you compete across 16 different international circuits. Before each race, you get a chance to practice and complete a qualifying lap, which determines your starting position. Getting near the front of the grid can make a huge difference, since the track quickly fills with rival cars and overtaking is not always easy.

There is also a surprisingly useful car setup system. Instead of driving the same machine throughout the entire season, you can spend points earned from good finishes on improving different parts of the car. You can also create your own team and choose its colors, or simply race with Al Unser Jr.'s fully upgraded machine.

The turbo system adds another layer of strategy. Your car has three gears, and activating the turbo can give you a major burst of speed, but the boost supply is limited. Once it runs low, you need to make a pit stop to refuel. Damage from collisions can also force you into the pits, so aggressive driving can come back to haunt you later in a race.

The NES hardware naturally limits the visual presentation, and the controls can take some time to master, particularly on tight corners. Still, the combination of qualifying, upgrades, pit stops, turbo management, and a full championship season gives Al Unser Jr.'s Turbo Racing more depth than many racing games of its era.
