About This Game

Released on the NES in 1987, Wizards & Warriors was one of Rare’s earliest adventures on Nintendo’s 8-bit console. Published by Acclaim, the game puts you in the role of Kuros, a knight on a mission to rescue a princess imprisoned by the evil wizard Malkil in Castle IronSpire. What makes the game stand out is that it feels like more than a simple run-and-jump platformer. There is a real sense of exploration as you work your way through the Kingdom of Elrond.

Kuros begins with his legendary Brightsword, but there are plenty of useful items hidden throughout the stages. You can find different weapons, potions, magical abilities, boots, keys, and other treasures that can dramatically change how you approach a particular section. Some areas also contain secret rooms and hidden passages, encouraging you to experiment rather than simply rush toward the exit.

The game takes Kuros through forests, underground passages, caves, and eventually the dangerous areas surrounding Castle IronSpire. Keys and gems are especially important, with many stages requiring exploration before you can reach the next major encounter. The platforming can be tricky, particularly when precise jumps are combined with enemies and environmental hazards.

One thing that makes Wizards & Warriors surprisingly approachable is its unlimited continues. Even when a difficult section sends Kuros back to the beginning of the stage, you can keep trying without burning through a limited stock of continues. That gives the game an unusual balance: the individual challenges can be tough, but persistence is rewarded.

With colorful visuals, memorable music, hidden items, and a surprisingly open approach to platforming, Wizards & Warriors remains one of the more distinctive fantasy adventures on the NES.
