Willow

Capcom’s Willow is an interesting example of how a movie license could turn into something much deeper than a simple action game. Released for the NES in 1989, it is an action RPG based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard. While Capcom also produced a separate arcade game based on the movie, the NES version takes a completely different approach, with an overhead world, exploration, character progression, and real-time combat.

You play as Willow Ufgood, a Nelwyn farmer who finds himself caught up in a much larger battle against the evil Queen Bavmorda. His journey involves protecting the infant Elora Danan and eventually finding a way to confront Bavmorda. Along the way, Willow travels through forests, villages, castles, and other fantasy locations while meeting characters who provide information, equipment, and assistance.

Combat is handled directly rather than through traditional turn-based menus. Willow can attack with swords, defend with shields, and use a variety of magical spells. Defeating enemies earns experience, allowing Willow to become stronger as the adventure progresses. New weapons, shields, and magical items are discovered during exploration or received as part of the story.

The result feels much closer to a Zelda-style adventure than a typical movie tie-in, although the RPG elements give it its own identity. Willow is also considerably more substantial than many licensed NES games, with a lengthy journey and plenty of exploration. For players who enjoy old-school fantasy adventures, it is a surprisingly ambitious and atmospheric NES RPG.
