About This Game

The Adventures of Rad Gravity is one of the more unusual science-fiction platformers on the NES. Developed by Interplay and published by Activision, it was released in North America in December 1990. You play as Rad Gravity, a futuristic space hero traveling between strange planets on a mission to restore communication between worlds and stop the villainous Agathos.

The adventure begins on Cyberia, but Rad's journey quickly expands into a much larger trip across the galaxy. There are several planets to visit, and each has its own atmosphere, enemies, hazards, and gameplay challenges. Some look like futuristic cities, while others are filled with jungles, lava, garbage, or bizarre alien creatures. Rather than simply moving from one stage to the next, you gradually discover new teleport locations and items that open up previously inaccessible parts of the adventure.

Combat is straightforward but satisfying. Rad starts with a sword-like weapon and can find additional weapons, armor, health upgrades, and useful objects during his travels. Some items are more important than they initially appear, since certain puzzles require equipment discovered on another planet. This gives the game a small exploration and adventure-game element alongside its traditional platforming.

One of Rad Gravity's most memorable ideas is its use of gravity. The planet Turvia completely flips the rules, turning the screen upside down and forcing Rad to navigate while gravity pulls him toward the ceiling. It is a simple idea, but it makes the level immediately stand out from the rest of the game.

The Adventures of Rad Gravity can be challenging and occasionally a little strange, but that odd personality is part of its charm. With its colorful planets, unusual mechanics, exploration, and quirky hero, it is a fascinating example of an NES platformer that tried something different.
