Game Overview
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1997, developed and published by Midway Games. It was one of the few attempts to take the Mortal Kombat series into a side-scrolling action-adventure format, arriving at a time when 3D platformers and fighting games dominated the console. The game serves as a prequel, setting up events that would later unfold in Mortal Kombat 4.You control Sub-Zero through a series of levels, moving screen by screen while fighting enemies, solving environmental puzzles, and navigating tricky platforming sections. Your main goal is to recover the ancient amulet of Shinnok, which involves traveling across different realms and facing several boss characters from the Mortal Kombat universe. Signature mechanics include using Sub-Zero’s ice-based attacks to freeze opponents in place, as well as performing his classic fatalities when the opportunity arises. The pacing is deliberate, often interrupted by difficult jumps and enemy encounters that demand precision. It feels like a rough but earnest experiment, blending exploration with the series' trademark violence.
