About This Game

Karnov is a classic side-scrolling action platformer developed by Data East and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1988. The game stars Jinborov Karnovski, better known as Karnov, a powerful Russian former circus strongman with an unusual ability to breathe fire. His mission is to recover the legendary Treasure of Babylon after the evil dragon Ryu steals it from the peaceful village of Creamina.

The journey takes Karnov through nine challenging stages filled with bizarre creatures, dangerous traps, and powerful bosses. From rugged mountains and icy landscapes to underwater passages and aerial sections, each environment introduces different obstacles that test your timing and movement. Karnov must run, jump, climb, swim, and even fly to reach his goal, making the adventure more varied than a straightforward run-and-gun game.

Karnov's signature attack is his fireball breath, which lets him strike enemies from a distance. Collecting special power-ups increases its strength, eventually allowing him to fire multiple fireballs at once. Other useful items include bombs for destroying obstacles, boomerangs for additional attacks, ladders for reaching elevated platforms, and shields that protect against enemy hits. Wings enable flight in certain sections, while special boots improve Karnov's jumping ability.

Exploration is an important part of the experience because many items are hidden throughout the levels. Choosing when to use limited equipment can make the difference between surviving a difficult encounter and losing a life. The game also features a continuation system, allowing players to resume their quest after losing all their lives, although the number of continues is limited.

With its unusual hero, imaginative enemies, diverse environments, and strategic item system, Karnov offers a distinctive action-platforming adventure from the early days of the NES. Its challenging gameplay and memorable fire-breathing protagonist make it a notable entry in Data East's classic game library.
