About This Game

Gyruss is a space shooter developed by Konami and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in February 1989 under the Ultra Games label. Originally introduced in arcades in 1983, the game became known for its distinctive circular movement system, which gives the impression of flying through a tunnel toward the center of the screen. Its combination of fast action, colorful enemies, and memorable music makes it a standout among classic space shooters.

The story takes place in the year 2500, when humanity has expanded across the solar system and established colonies from Mercury to Pluto. This peaceful era comes to an end when hostile alien forces launch an invasion, threatening every planet in their path. As the last surviving pilot, players must fight their way through enemy fleets and travel toward Earth to restore peace to the galaxy.

Unlike traditional horizontal or vertical scrolling shooters, Gyruss places the player's spacecraft around the outer edge of a circular battlefield. Enemies appear near the center and move outward, creating a unique sense of depth and motion. Players rotate around the perimeter, firing toward the middle while dodging incoming attackers and projectiles. Precise movement and quick reactions are essential as enemy formations become more aggressive.

The NES version expands on the original arcade game with additional enemies, powerful boss encounters, and bonus stages. The journey covers 39 stages across the solar system, including planets such as Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. Players can collect satellites for extra points, weapon upgrades, additional lives, and other helpful bonuses. A special phaser attack provides extra firepower when ordinary shots are not enough.

Another memorable feature is the energetic soundtrack, which includes a dramatic electronic arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The music adds intensity to the relentless space battles.

With its unusual circular shooting mechanics, expanded campaign, and distinctive soundtrack, Gyruss offers a challenging and memorable experience for fans of retro NES arcade games.
