Cobra Command
About This Game
Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, Cobra Command is a helicopter-based action game developed and published by Data East. Set across hostile territory in Southeast Asia, the game puts you in control of an advanced attack helicopter on a dangerous mission to rescue captured hostages and take down enemy installations. Despite sharing its name with an earlier arcade game, this NES version offers its own side-scrolling adventure inspired by rescue-focused shooters such as Choplifter.
Your mission takes you through six stages, including Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the South China Sea, Siam, and the enemy headquarters. Each area presents a different combination of terrain, enemy positions, and rescue objectives. You must locate hostages scattered across the landscape, eliminate threats, and explore hidden underground facilities. Simply destroying everything in sight is not enough; completing a stage depends on rescuing the required number of people.
Combat can become intense as enemy helicopters, tanks, artillery, fighter aircraft, and warships attack from different directions. Your helicopter is equipped with guns and missiles, but choosing when to fire and how to approach each threat makes a real difference. You can also discover upgrades that improve your weapons, armor, engines, and rescue equipment. These improvements become increasingly valuable as the opposition grows tougher.
Rescuing hostages requires careful flying. You need to bring your helicopter close to people on the ground and deploy a rope or ladder so they can climb aboard. Meanwhile, enemy fire and awkward terrain can turn an apparently simple pickup into a risky maneuver.
Cobra Command rewards players who balance aggressive shooting with precise movement and thoughtful exploration. Its challenging missions, upgrade system, and rescue mechanics make it a distinctive entry in the NES action library, especially for fans of classic helicopter games.
