About This Game

Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters is a turn-based strategy game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in February 1992. Developed and published by Toho, it takes a very different approach from the action-platforming gameplay of its predecessor, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!. Instead of controlling giant creatures directly, players command the Allied Defense Forces and attempt to protect humanity from Godzilla and other destructive monsters.

The story describes a world in crisis. Environmental destruction has awakened giant monsters, while an alien invasion makes the situation even more dangerous. Nations respond by forming an international defense force equipped with experimental weapons and military units. As commander-in-chief, the player must coordinate these forces, eliminate the monsters, and prevent critical locations from being destroyed.

The game features 12 independent scenarios, each with its own map, enemy monsters, available units, and objectives. Players select commands from on-screen menus and move military units across a grid-based battlefield. Available forces include fighters, missile units, radar vehicles, specialized anti-monster weapons, and powerful experimental machines such as the Super-X2. Certain units can transport equipment, while radar vehicles help reveal hidden enemies.

Each turn requires careful planning. Players must decide where to move their forces, which enemies to attack, and which cities or strategic facilities need protection. After the player's turn ends, the monsters move and launch their own attacks. Losing all friendly units or allowing a vital facility to be destroyed results in defeat.

Combat introduces an unusual slot-machine-style mechanic: players stop moving symbols to determine bonuses that can affect attack strength, defense, accuracy, and other battle statistics. This adds an element of chance to an otherwise tactical experience.

With its military command system, multiple scenarios, specialized weapons, and strategic monster encounters, Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters offers a distinctive alternative to traditional kaiju action games. It is an intriguing choice for retro gamers who enjoy challenging turn-based strategy on the NES.
