Ghost Lion
About This Game
Ghost Lion is a fantasy role-playing game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in October 1992 in North America. Developed and published by Kemco, the game offers a distinctive adventure inspired by traditional Japanese RPGs, with mysterious worlds, turn-based battles, magical creatures, and a story centered on courage, hope, and family.
The adventure follows Maria, a young girl whose parents disappear while investigating the legend of a mysterious white lion. According to the tale, the supernatural beast once attacked her village before being driven away by a brave warrior. Determined to discover what happened to her parents, Maria sets out on her own journey. After falling into a river inside a cave, she awakens in a strange fantasy world filled with unfamiliar towns, dangerous monsters, and hidden secrets. Her quest becomes a search for her missing family and the truth behind the Ghost Lion.
Gameplay combines exploration with menu-based, turn-based combat. Players travel across world maps, visit towns, speak with characters, search treasure chests, and explore caves, towers, castles, and other dangerous locations. Battles feature enemies such as zombies, goblins, skeletons, and other fantasy creatures.
One of the game's most unusual features is its spirit-summoning system. Rather than relying on a traditional party of human companions, Maria can summon spirits connected to special items, including the warrior Moja and the magical Twana. These allies provide different attacks and abilities, making equipment and inventory management important parts of combat.
Ghost Lion also replaces familiar RPG statistics with three distinctive attributes: Hope represents Maria's level, Courage measures her health, and Dream determines her magical power. Hope increases by finding special fragments scattered throughout the world rather than simply defeating enemies and gaining experience.
With its unusual progression system, spirit companions, and dreamlike fantasy setting, Ghost Lion offers a memorable alternative to more conventional NES role-playing adventures.
