Galaxy 5000: Racing in the 51st Century
About This Game
Galaxy 5000: Racing in the 51st Century is a futuristic racing game developed and published by Activision for the Nintendo Entertainment System in February 1991. Set in the 51st century, it takes traditional racing into outer space, where armored spacecraft compete on dangerous tracks scattered across the solar system. With its combination of racing, combat, and vehicle upgrades, the game offers a different experience from conventional NES driving games.
Players begin their career on Mercury and work toward becoming a champion of the Galaxy 5000 racing circuit. Races feature four spacecraft competing across winding courses suspended in space. The isometric perspective provides a clear view of upcoming turns, gaps, hazards, and rival vehicles, but keeping control of your craft takes practice. Players can choose between two control schemes, allowing them to steer and accelerate in different ways.
Winning races is only part of the challenge. Opponents can be attacked with limited weapons, while track hazards such as land mines, gun turrets, speed zappers, and solar spikes threaten to end a promising run. Spacecraft can also jump over obstacles and gaps, but a poorly timed leap can send a racer flying off the course. Races must be completed before time runs out, or the track begins to disintegrate beneath the remaining competitors.
Prize money gives the game an additional strategic layer. Earnings can be spent repairing a damaged vehicle or purchasing a more powerful craft with improved weapons and shielding. Players must balance performance upgrades against repair costs to stay competitive throughout the championship.
Galaxy 5000 also supports two-player racing, letting friends compete head-to-head while computer-controlled racers fill out the field. Its digitized voice effects, colorful sci-fi tracks, and unusual blend of combat and racing make it a distinctive entry in the NES library.
