About This Game

Amagon is one of those NES action games that takes a fairly simple idea and gives it a memorable twist. You play as Amagon, a Marine whose plane crashes on a dangerous South Pacific island. His rescue ship is waiting on the other side, but getting there means fighting through six different zones filled with monsters, obstacles, and giant enemies. The game was developed by Aicom and released on the NES in the late 1980s. In Japan, it was known as Totsuzen! Machoman.

At first, Amagon has to rely on his machine gun and his ability to jump, dodge, and fight at close range when his ammunition runs out. Bullets are limited, so shooting everything that moves is not always the best approach. Enemy drops can provide additional ammunition, extra lives, and score bonuses, making exploration and careful shooting worthwhile.

The real attraction, however, is Amagon's transformation into Megagon, a much larger and stronger version of the hero. Finding the Mega-Key and reaching the required score allows you to transform at the right moment. Megagon can absorb hits that would immediately defeat normal Amagon and can use powerful attacks, including a laser beam. The catch is that his strength is tied to points, so using the transformation effectively becomes an important part of surviving tougher sections.

Amagon is not an easy game, but its transformation mechanic gives it more personality than a typical run-and-gun platformer. Learning when to conserve ammunition, when to transform, and how to approach each zone makes the journey across the island surprisingly engaging. For NES fans who enjoy challenging side-scrolling action, Amagon is a quirky and worthwhile game to revisit.
