About This Game

Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is a fantasy-themed shoot-'em-up for the Nintendo Entertainment System that replaces the usual fighter planes and spaceships with a powerful fire-breathing dragon. Developed by Now Production and released in Japan by Namco in 1989, the game reached North America through Bandai in June 1990. It reworks the original arcade game with a new storyline, additional stages, and a distinctive difficulty system.

The adventure takes place in the kingdom of Olympia, where the evil Galda has returned the demon Zawel to life and kidnapped Princess Iris. Her brother, Prince Lace, must take up his father's magical sword and transform into a dragon to save her and protect the kingdom. As the story unfolds, players travel through dangerous landscapes filled with airborne enemies, ground-based creatures, and enormous bosses.

Gameplay follows the familiar vertical-scrolling shooter formula, but the dragon gives it a unique identity. You guide your character across the screen while firing at enemies in the air and dropping attacks toward targets on the ground. Power-ups improve your firepower, restore health, and can add extra heads to your dragon, increasing its offensive strength. Collecting upgrades is essential, since taking damage can reduce your abilities and make later encounters much harder.

One of the game's most interesting features is its two difficulty paths. Players who survive the opening challenge continue as the powerful Blue Dragon on the standard route. If they fall during that initial stage, the game switches to a more forgiving Golden Dragon adventure, with stronger attacks, extra durability, and a shorter progression. This unusual mechanic gives the game an alternative way to handle difficulty while offering different experiences on repeat playthroughs.

With its colorful fantasy settings, memorable dragon protagonist, and challenging boss battles, Dragon Spirit: The New Legend stands out among classic NES shooters. It is a rewarding choice for retro players who enjoy arcade-style action with a little more story and personality.
