Bonk's Adventure
About This Game
Bonk's Adventure is a colorful prehistoric platformer starring one of the strangest mascots to come out of the 16-bit era. On the NES, however, Bonk's story takes a slightly different form. Originally created for the PC Engine, the game was brought to the Famicom in 1993 and released in North America as Bonk's Adventure in January 1994. The NES version was developed by A.I. and published by Hudson Soft.
Bonk is a caveman who has one particularly useful weapon: his enormous head. Instead of relying on a traditional jump attack, he can smash enemies with powerful headbutts, spin through the air, and use his head to break through obstacles. Flowers can also be used as springboards, giving Bonk extra height and allowing him to reach platforms or avoid enemies.
The adventure takes place in a colorful prehistoric world filled with dinosaurs, strange creatures, traps, and plenty of oversized enemies. Bonk can collect food and power-ups along the way, with certain items changing his abilities and making him much more effective in combat. The ultimate goal is to rescue the Moon Princess after she is kidnapped by the villainous King Drool.
What makes the NES version particularly interesting is that it is not simply a perfect copy of the PC Engine game. Levels were redesigned and some enemies and visual elements were removed or changed to fit Nintendo's hardware. Bonk's appearance was also adjusted using elements from later games in the series.
The result is a charming, slightly eccentric platformer with expressive characters and a sense of humor that helps it stand apart from more conventional NES adventures. It may not have the same technical power as the original PC Engine release, but Bonk's personality still comes through clearly. For fans of unusual platform heroes, Bonk's Adventure is an interesting late-era NES game worth discovering.
