The Smurfs
About This Game
Released for the NES in 1994, The Smurfs is a late-generation platformer from Bit Managers and Infogrames. Unlike many NES games that received worldwide releases, this one was primarily a European release, making it a particularly interesting title for collectors and retro players who enjoy discovering lesser-known PAL exclusives.
The story is classic Smurfs. Gargamel has captured three Smurfs, and one brave Smurf must leave the village and travel through a dangerous journey to rescue them. Along the way, you'll explore forests, mountains, swamps, mines, and volcanic areas while dealing with enemies such as Azrael, Buzz Flies, Howlibirds, and other hazards.
Gameplay is built around traditional side-scrolling platforming. Precise jumping is especially important, as many sections require careful movement across platforms and around enemies. The game also tries to break up the standard platforming with several different sequences, including riding a log down a river, sledding down snowy slopes, traveling through a mine, and riding on the back of a stork. These changes give the adventure a little more variety than a straightforward run-and-jump game.
The Smurfs has a colorful presentation and cheerful soundtrack that fit the cartoon license well, although the game can be surprisingly challenging. Its relatively short length also means experienced players can reach the ending fairly quickly.
Today, The Smurfs is best remembered as one of the NES's later European exclusives. It may not be one of the system's most famous platformers, but its unusual release history, recognizable characters, and varied level design make it a fun title to revisit.
