Section Z

Section Z is a science-fiction shoot-'em-up developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Originally released as an arcade game in 1985, it arrived on the NES in North America in 1987. This challenging space adventure combines side-scrolling shooting with maze-like exploration, creating a different experience from many straightforward arcade shooters of its era.

The story takes place in the distant future, when Earth faces an invasion by the alien forces of the Balangool Empire. Their powerful space fortress threatens humanity, and a lone space ranger must infiltrate the enemy base, fight through its defenses, and destroy the central control system known as L-Brain.

Players control Captain Commando as he travels through a sprawling network of interconnected sections. Instead of simply moving forward until a level ends, you must choose transporters that lead to different parts of the fortress. Some routes provide access to new areas, while others may send you backward or remain inaccessible until you complete specific objectives. Learning the layout and remembering which paths to take becomes an important part of the mission.

Combat requires constant attention because enemies attack from multiple directions. Captain Commando can shoot either left or right while moving around the screen, allowing you to engage opponents without always traveling toward them. Collectible power-ups improve your weapons and provide useful advantages, while special weapons consume energy that must be managed carefully. You must also locate and destroy power generators to unlock critical routes and reach the stage-ending bosses.
