About This Game

Mr. Gimmick is a charming but challenging platform game developed and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. Known as Gimmick! in Japan, the game was released in Scandinavia under the title Mr. Gimmick in 1993. It stands out for its colorful graphics, detailed animation, imaginative level design, and physics-based gameplay that pushes the NES hardware to its limits.

The story follows Yumetaro, a small green creature who is given to a young girl as a birthday present. Her other toys become jealous of the attention he receives and kidnap the girl, taking her to a mysterious world inhabited by living toys. Determined to rescue his owner, Yumetaro sets off across strange landscapes filled with dangerous enemies, hidden treasures, and powerful bosses.

Yumetaro's most important ability is his magical star. He can summon a star above his head and throw it at enemies, where it bounces around the environment according to realistic physics. The star is more than a weapon, however: Yumetaro can also ride it to reach high platforms, cross dangerous gaps, and discover secret areas. Mastering its movement is essential for overcoming the game's trickier obstacles.

The adventure spans six main stages, each featuring unique environments, enemies, and boss encounters. Players can discover hidden treasures throughout the levels, and finding every treasure unlocks an additional secret stage. The game also includes useful items such as bombs and potions, but resources must be used carefully because the difficulty can be unforgiving.

With its precise controls, creative mechanics, memorable soundtrack, and rewarding secrets, Mr. Gimmick is considered a standout among late-era NES platformers. Its combination of cute character design and demanding gameplay makes it an excellent choice for fans of classic retro adventures.
