Mario Kart 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1996, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of those games that really showed what the system could do with 3D racing, especially with friends in the same room. The colorful tracks and familiar characters made it an immediate favorite during the N64's early years.

You control one of several Nintendo characters, each driving their own kart with unique handling and speed. The main goal is simple: finish first in a series of cups across various themed tracks. Key mechanics include drifting around corners to build up a temporary speed boost, and using a wide array of items picked up from floating boxes, like banana peels to spin out opponents or red shells that home in on the racer ahead. The pacing is fast and often chaotic, especially with multiple players, where a well-timed lightning bolt can shrink everyone else just before the finish line. It feels frantic and unpredictable, but always brings you back for one more race.
