About This Game

Jaws brings the terror of the famous shark franchise to the Nintendo Entertainment System in an action adventure released in 1987 by LJN. Loosely based on Jaws: The Revenge, the game sends you into dangerous tropical waters where a massive great white shark is waiting beneath the surface. Your mission is to survive encounters with hostile sea creatures, improve your equipment, and prepare for a final showdown with the legendary predator.

The adventure begins with an overhead ocean map, where you steer your boat across the water. Contact with enemies can trigger side-view action sequences, placing you in control of a boat, a scuba diver, or a mini-submarine. As a diver, you use a weapon to fight smaller sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, and other underwater creatures. These encounters can reward you with conch shells, which are used to improve your equipment and increase your chances of surviving later battles.

Exploration and upgrades are essential to making progress. You can encounter a more powerful submarine that offers better firepower, while bonus stages provide additional opportunities to collect shells. Each successful battle against Jaws reduces the shark's power meter, gradually bringing you closer to the final confrontation. Once the shark has been weakened enough, the game shifts to a special ending sequence in which you must time your actions carefully to deliver the finishing blow.

Unlike many straightforward action games of its era, Jaws combines exploration, side-scrolling combat, resource collection, and equipment upgrades into a compact adventure. Its different gameplay perspectives give the ocean a sense of variety, while the recurring threat of the giant shark provides a clear goal throughout the journey.

For fans of classic movie-based video games and retro action adventures, Jaws offers a distinctive 8-bit take on one of cinema's most recognizable sea monsters.
