Ice Hockey
About This Game
Take to the rink and compete for victory in Ice Hockey, Nintendo’s classic 8-bit sports game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. Developed by Nintendo and Pax Softnica and published by Nintendo, the game delivers fast-paced hockey action with simple controls, strategic team selection, and plenty of hard-hitting moments. You can play against the computer or challenge a friend in two-player matches.
Before the puck drops, players choose from six national teams: the United States, Sweden, Poland, Canada, the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia. You can also customize your lineup by selecting different body types for your four skaters. Thin players move quickly and perform well during face-offs, but they lack shooting power and strength. Heavier players skate more slowly yet deliver powerful shots and body checks. Average players offer a balance between speed and physical ability, allowing you to build a lineup that suits your preferred style.
Matches consist of three periods, with selectable period lengths and five game-speed settings. During play, you pass the puck, charge toward the opposing goal, take shots, and use body checks to disrupt your rivals. Winning possession often requires quick reactions, particularly when players crowd around the puck. These battles can escalate into fights, resulting in penalties and power-play opportunities that temporarily give one team a numerical advantage.
If a game ends in a tie, penalty shots determine the winner before the match moves into sudden-death overtime if necessary. This creates tense finishes where a single successful shot can make the difference.
With its distinctive player customization, accessible controls, and lively multiplayer action, Ice Hockey remains a memorable entry in Nintendo’s early sports lineup. Whether you're building a balanced team or filling your roster with powerful shooters, every match offers a fresh test of timing and strategy.
