Heavy Barrel
About This Game
Heavy Barrel is a top-down run-and-gun action game developed and published by Data East for the Nintendo Entertainment System in March 1990. Originally released in arcades in 1987, the game delivers intense military combat inspired by classic overhead shooters. Players take on the role of a special forces operative tasked with infiltrating a heavily fortified enemy installation and stopping a terrorist army from launching its nuclear missiles.
The adventure takes place inside an underground missile complex seized by hostile forces. Armed enemies patrol the surrounding terrain, while tanks, helicopters, gun emplacements, and other military threats stand between the player and the enemy commander. The mission requires fighting through dangerous outdoor areas, crossing bridges, navigating waterways, and entering enemy strongholds.
Gameplay uses an overhead perspective that allows players to move in multiple directions while firing at enemies. The character begins with a standard gun and a limited supply of grenades. Better weapons and additional ammunition can be discovered throughout the levels, often hidden inside storage containers. Keys are essential for opening locked boxes, which may contain useful power-ups or valuable weapon components.
The game's signature feature is the Heavy Barrel superweapon. This devastating energy cannon has been dismantled into six separate pieces and hidden throughout the installation. Players must find the components and assemble the weapon to gain an enormous advantage against powerful enemies. Once activated, it delivers extraordinary firepower, although its energy lasts for only a limited time.
Heavy Barrel also supports two-player cooperative play, allowing friends to fight side by side through enemy territory. Working together makes it easier to handle large enemy formations and survive demanding encounters.
With its relentless shooting, hidden equipment, powerful bosses, and cooperative action, Heavy Barrel offers a challenging arcade-style experience for fans of classic NES military shooters.
